What is the difference between EPC and turnkey?
More commonly, the Owner funds the project and operates the plant after commissioning. Engineer, Procure and Construct (EPC) and Turnkey are similar, and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. The engineering, procurement and construction is completed by the Contractor, but the funding and plant operation are by the Owner.
Should a project be delivered under an EPC or turnkey contract?
One of the main drivers for and major advantages delivering a project under an EPC or turnkey contract, as opposed to adopting a multi-contract approach, is that project developers and project finance lenders have a single point of responsibility.
Are EPC contracts available in New Zealand?
EPC contracts are commonly used overseas (including in Australia). However, until recently, they have not been as frequently or commonly used in New Zealand, and there is currently no New Zealand standard form EPC contract available for use by renewable energy developers.
When does a turnkey project work?
Turnkey works well when there is a well-established contractor capability for the type of project, and the Owner is less concerned with how their required functionality is achieved, for example, for large pieces of proprietary equipment such as packaging lines.
