How will the ESS bid help the Jeju system?
"With this bid we will further promote the distribution of ESS, which will play an important role in stabilising the Jeju system while also promoting the establishment of a power market tailored to the characteristics of each power source," said Motie director of electricity policy Lee Ok-heon.
How long will ESS bid last?
The winning bid will secure a term tender of 15-20 years, which will determine the price and volume through the ESS bidding market. Providers will be paid at the pre-contracted price when the facility is operating in the future, the country's energy and industry ministry (Motie) said in August when it issued the tender.
Why do we need a Bess contract in ?
Strengthening the domestic BESS landscape not only supports internal resilience but also serves as a proving ground for exported technologies. The tender builds on the government’s initial foray into centralized BESS contracts, launched in with a 65MW, 4-hour project on Jeju Island.
The project is expected to cost about $725 million (1 trillion won) and will be awarded based on both pricing and non-price factors, such as contributions to domestic industry and battery recycling capabilities.Powering the Grid: South Korea’s ESS Auction
